Ash:...handcuffed to the bed, so he's out of the way for now.
Valentine: And this is all because you killed his father?
Obsidian: You see, killing in our family is more about keeping the line pure. He killed both of our parents and became family head. Only the last surviving sibling inherits the family legacy. We're not in competition because we're cousins.
Ash: I've never really followed our family creed. It was just revenge.


Obsidian: But the point is, it wasn't personal for Magma because he does follow the creed. How did he describe how you did it? Masterful? Cunning? Merciless?


Ash: 'Sexy' was the exact wording, I believe.


Valentine: Wow, your family is...
Ash: Pretty screwed up.
Valentine: I wasn't going to say that.
Ash: Where did you get those pants? Have you been dressing yourself again?
Valentine: Nightshade gave them to me.
Ash: You accepted?! Remember what happened the last time?


Valentine: It blew up. I know. But it was different this time. She said it was in thanks for helping her 'achieve the next level' or something like that.

Commentary:
This episode was made to further explain Ash's familys' weirdness--though a really explicit explanation has yet to find its way into the storyline--and to set up the Nightshade-takes-over-the-world storyarc.

To recap: Being a family raised in Roman/Italian high politics, the Nero family was breeding for ruthlessness and cunning long before Machiavelli. To inherit the family head, the children have to prove their superiority by offing the competition personally. Brothers and sisters are in direct competition, but if siblings live long enough to have children, cousins are not in competition. In Ash's family, this led to an alliance between Magma, Ash, and Obsidian (Obsidian is the eldest and Ash is the youngest), which helped each of them survive their own brothers and sisters. Another tradition in the Nero family is to have each generations' names all along the same theme.

Magma is a strong believer in the family creed and is the current head of family as his father killed Ash and Obsidians' parents. He wants Ash to be his wife as in his opinion, there is no woman more intelligent and ruthless (While Obsidan may be moreso, she never gets her own hands dirty). Ash has plans other than having children, and while she loves her cousin it's just not in that way. Obsidian may or may not follow the family creed, but as she kills off all her husbands and lovers fairly quickly, it's probably not likely she has yet met anyone who would meet her standards.
